PETALING JAYA, Oct 4 — Acclaimed sitarist Anoushka Shankar has announced the cancellation of her scheduled performance at Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur yesterday, citing circumstances beyond her control.
The concert, set for tonight, was to mark her long awaited return to Malaysia after several years.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep frustration that I must announce the cancellation of TOMORROW’s performance at Plenary Hall in Kuala Lumpur,” Shankar wrote on Instagram.
“I was deeply excited to be performing in Malaysia again after so many years. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, the show has been cancelled by the promoter, Shiraz Projects.”
She assured fans that refunds will be provided: “We have been assured that all ticket holders will receive full refunds. Please keep an eye on your email and contact Shiraz Projects or your point of purchase directly for details on the refund process.”
Shankar also expressed regret for the disruption caused to fans who had made travel plans: “I feel terrible for the disappointment and inconvenience this causes our audience, especially those of you who made travel arrangements from further afield.”
One fan commented: “I travelled from Indonesia to KL just to see you live! And the cancellation was 24 hours before.”
Shankar herself replied: “I know, it’s devastating. We have just reached here too and only were told once here. I’m so sorry. I hope we will play in Indonesia soon.”
The Grammy nominated musician, daughter of legendary sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, has built a global following with her fusion of classical Indian traditions and contemporary sounds.
Her last Malaysian performance was more than a decade ago, making the cancellation especially disappointing for local fans.
Despite the setback, Shankar left the door open for a future return: “I sincerely hope to have the opportunity to return to Kuala Lumpur and perform for you all in the near future.”
