KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will make its Malaysian debut at the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) in Selangor from December 22, 2026 to January 10, 2027, bringing the beloved story to local audiences for the first time.

Broadway International Group and Broadway Asia, in association with Sunway South Quay Sdn Bhd, announced the exclusive Malaysia season in a statement, saying tickets are available through CloudJoi starting today.

“We are so excited to share the breathtaking world of this beloved Broadway musical about the power of imagination, and the art of invention with Selangor audiences in this spectacular new immersive production from an all-Broadway creative team,” producers Simone Genatt and Marc Routh said.

The musical is based on Dahl’s classic novel and follows Charlie Bucket’s journey into Willy Wonka’s fantastical chocolate factory, featuring chocolate rivers, nut-sorting squirrels and Oompa-Loompas, alongside songs such as Pure Imagination, The Candy Man and I’ve Got a Golden Ticket.

The production uses hologauze 3D technology and new stage illusions designed by Las Vegas magic specialist Tim Clothier, who said, “Willy Wonka is the king of imagination, and being able to design new stage wizardry for that character is a dream come true.”

The show premiered on Broadway in 2017 and later toured North America for four years, with additional runs on London’s West End where it won two Olivier Awards.

The global tour is expected to travel for two to three years across Asia, the Middle East and India, with stops planned in Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Hainan, Taipei and Seoul.

The Malaysian season will feature direction by Matt Lenz, choreography by Alison Solomon and musical supervision by Nate Patten and Greg Jarrett, supported by a Broadway creative team including designers Mark Thompson, Christine Peters, Jeff Sugg, Rory Beaton, Mike Thacker, Basil Twist and Tim Clothier.

The production includes music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, and a book by David Greig, with songs from the 1971 film by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.

JCPAC, located in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, will host the run at its 1,200-seat Grand Theatre, which features Malaysia’s first Active Acoustic system.

Sunway Group said JCPAC was established to serve as a dedicated home for the performing arts and to bring world-class productions to Malaysian audiences.
