KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — As one of the best vocalists in the country, few things are worse than losing your voice.
But that’s exactly what happened to singer Liza Hanim whose distinct sultry voice has been permanently affected after getting Covid-19 three times.
Sadly, it’s also affected her energy level and she can no longer perform the way she used to.
But the 44-year-old hasn’t given up hope that one day her old voice will come back and she continues singing to keep her fans happy.
"The key to pulling off a good show is having good health,” she said, adding that her voice is different from three years ago.
"The problem nowadays is that strange diseases attack you and changes your voice for good.”
Each of the three times she tested positive for Covid-19 crushed her spirit and made her want to give up, reported BH Online.
It also affected her breathing and stamina but she’s grateful she didn’t end up in hospital like many others did.
Liza, who won best vocalist at the 17th Juara Lagu Awards in 2003, said that regular exercise is crucial in maintaining healthy lungs and stamina.
"Now that I’m older and prone to infection, it’s important for me to keep exercising. I can still sing but I won’t deny there are problems.”
But it’s not something she stresses over as she has nothing to prove and just wants to sing her best whenever she wants.
The mother of five added that while worrying about her ability to sing in the future is normal, she believes in staying positive and having faith in God.
"Of course, I worry about the future but I’ve accepted that at my age changes will happen,” said Liza, whose singing career took off at the age of 17 after she won an RTM singing competition in 1996.
"Worrying about the ageing process is not going to stop it,” she continued. "I’m human like everyone else and eventually, my skin will wrinkle too.”
For now, she’s grateful she can still sing and that people still want to hear her sing.
"When the time finally comes for me to stop singing, I will accept it. Until then, I will continue singing to keep myself and my fans happy.”
Liza will make an appearance at Konsert P. Ramlee — Signature A Minor 7 at PJPAC on July 7 and 8 with singer Sean Ghazi.
The concert held in commemoration of Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s 50th death anniversary will showcase 12 of his award-winning songs from 1953 to 1965.
