PETALING JAYA, April 28 — For a band that started in 2012, six years might be a long time to release an album.

But for musical pop sextet Fazz, everything has come full circle with the release of their debut album Passage.

For electric double bassist Raja Farouk Raja Zaini Ismail, Passage is the band’s passport to jump from where they are to where they will go next.

"It’s more like our official CV for the corporate world,” he said.

Fazz comprises Raja Farouk, Grace Cho (keyboards), Jone Yeoh (drums), Jason Lim (trombone), Ad Wafri (trumpet) and Tan Yon Lynn (vocalist).

The band has a unique style of music where they mix elements of cabaret, vaudeville, rock and roll, and jazz into something they call musical pop.

And with the help of Toybox Project, Fazz’s new management team secured Warner Music to help distribute Passage.

Drummer Yeoh never imagined the band would reach this stage where an international music company would help them promote their brand of music.

"We never thought much about having an album,” he said.

"We’re just doing what we know, and that is to play our brand of music.

"We love playing in front of crowds while getting the energy back from them. We just wanted to be right there in their faces.”

With the release of Passage, Fazz still consider themselves a performing band and prefer to play their music "live”.

And band founder Cho admitted she felt they had gone through a change.

"It comes with more pressure,” the Korean said.

"We can still have fun but it comes with more responsibility.”

But she also said the band is more structured and has a direction under its management team.

"Toybox Project sets the base structure and we will ride this journey together,” she added.

"We can’t rely on them 100 per cent and we need to do our homework too to succeed in this business.”

The band collectively agreed they would love to perform with a full orchestra one day.

"We would love to play with a full symphony,” Cho added.

"I think that is the dream of any band or performing artiste.

"Maybe one day our dream will be realised and we get to play with an orchestra, and even a choir providing back-up vocals for Yon Lynn.”

Fazz chose an Alice in Wonderland theme for Passage and the first track from the album is called Cheshire Cat.

"The song is about how chaotic someone’s mind can be, representing what it was like for Alice in Wonderland,” Farouk said.

The band has performed in a few spots in Kuala Lumpur such as No Black Tie and Ril’s Bangsar.

The young musicians next outing will be at Kasbah Kuala Lumpur today where they aim to promote Passage to fans and new listeners.

They are also inviting everyone to dress up as their favourite character from Alice in Wonderland.

"It’s something we’ve always wanted to make happen,” Yon Lynn said.
