LOS ANGELES, Jan 22 — The titular Pokémon of Detective Pikachu has been busy collecting stars instead of evidence it seems.

Stars for its upcoming movie that is, since it’s been announced that Oscar-nominated Ken Watanabe is now officially part of the cast line-up too, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Watanabe will play Detective Yoshida, a character created specifically for the movie.

The 58-year-old actor is joining a cast led by Ryan Reynolds, who will be voicing the sleuthing Pikachu. So far another two cast members confirmed for the movie are Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies).

In this first live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese game, Smith’s character’s father gets kidnapped, forcing him to team up with Pikachu and Newton’s character, described as a sassy journalist, to find and rescue his father.

Watanabe is no stranger to Legendary Entertainment’s productions as he has appeared in 2014’s Godzilla and will also be seen in the 2019 sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Production on Detective Pikachu is set to begin this month in London. — CinemaOnline
