LOS ANGELES, March 13 — The 2017 Kid’s Choice Awards turned up three triple-winners, with action comedy Ghostbusters, animated adventure Finding Dory, and Kevin Hart from The Secret Life of Pets each involved in three separate accolades; music group Fifth Harmony and TV show Henry Danger were also multiple winners at the annual event.

Franchise reboot Ghostbusters, ocean-crossing adventure Finding Dory, and comic actor Kevin Hart led the field at the 2017 Kid’s Choice Awards with three wins each at the March 11 event.

Two acting awards and the overall Favourite Movie accolade went to mid-2016 comedy Ghostbusters, with Melissa McCarthy and Chris Hemsworth collecting Favourite Film Actress and Favourite Film Actor for their respective performances.

The film had launched in the midst of a packed July US theatrical release schedule, one that saw it following Finding Dory and The BFG and debuting just before both Ice Age: Collision Course and Star Trek Beyond.

A US$229.1 million (RM1.01 billion) international box office and positive but generally lukewarm reviews meant that the otherwise highly anticipated film was considered to have made an underwhelming impact.

Nevertheless, Ghostbusters has evidently found an appreciative audience as awards season draws to a close, after Melissa McCarthy won a People’s Choice Award in January.

Also in movies and TV at the Nickelodeon KCAs were multiple wins for Finding Dory and Kevin Hart.

Finding Dory was the ceremony’s Favourite Animated Movie and, like Ghostbusters, the Disney Pixar release produced two acting awards — one for the voice of its Regal blue tang, Dory, as played by Ellen DeGeneres, and a Squad award for DeGeneres and the ensemble cast as a whole.

It had previously won three accolades from the People’s Choice Awards and several specialist awards such as those from the Cinema Audio Society and Visual Effects Society.

Kevin Hart starred in The Secret Life of Pets as its fluffy feline villain, Snowball, for which he won both Favourite Villain and Most Wanted Pet, while a third KCA came his way for his on-screen partnership with Dwayne Johnson in buddy comedy Central Intelligence.

Both Finding Dory and The Secret Life of Pets were theatrical blockbusters, with ...Pets passing US$875 million worldwide and Finding Dory clearing US$1 billion, making it the third highest-grossing film of the year.

Henry Danger won Favourite Kids TV Show and favourite TV actor for its lead, Jace Norman, while comedy revival Fuller House triumphed in Family TV, America’s Got Talent was top in Reality, and SpongeBob Squarepants was Favourite Cartoon. Zendaya, soon to appear in Spider-Man Homecoming and The Greatest Showman, was TV’s favourite female star for her lead role in KC Undercover. — AFP-Relaxnews
