KUALA LUMPUR, March 6 — Malaysian rapper Namewee’s latest song Stranger in the North featuring Taiwan superstar Wang Leehom has gone viral.
Since its release on March 4, the video has chalked up more than 760,000 views on YouTube.
Both Leehom and Namewee also shared the video on their official Facebook pages over the weekend.
Namewee wrote that he was "surprised” and "moved” when Leehom agreed to collaborate with him after hearing a demo of the song.
He added that he "shed a few tears” when they met for the first time in Beijing, after Leehom gave him a "big, American-style hug.”
The admiration appears to be mutual, as Leehom praised Namewee for his "boundless creativity” in his Facebook post.
Perhaps those more used to hearing his controversial lyrics will be surprised to know that the song is an ode to the life of the migrant worker in Beijing, but could also be read as an insight into the solitary existence of an aspiring singer attempting to make a name for himself in a foreign country.
Stranger in the North also features on Namewee’s new album Crossover Asia.
