Why Jeannie Mai doesn’t like 'comfortable' clothes

SINGAPORE, Aug 1 — Not even Jeannie Mai is immune to the Singaporean salted egg craze.

The American celebrity fashion stylist, who hosts the US makeover television show How Do I Look, has taken her style revolution here, spending weeks shooting in Singapore.

How Do I Look Asia’s last season was co-hosted by Mai and Malaysia’s Sazzy Falak, but this new season, she’s going it alone.

"I had to come and pretty much move here for a couple of weeks because I’m not only hosting the show but I’m an executive producer. I’m kind of a control freak,” Mai told us when we visited the How Do I Look Asia set at Universal Studios Singapore in May.

"I love Singapore. I had fans come and drop off salted egg buns. I’m obsessed. I can’t stop eating them,” she continued.

"Salted egg everything is my life right now. I’m going to go have salted egg crab tonight or tomorrow. We don’t have it in the United States, so it’s really different.”

Another thing she learnt about Singaporeans, besides our penchant for all things salted egg, was that style-wise, we have an all-consuming need to dress comfortably — and that was her biggest hurdle.

"Comfortable! Kill me! It’s the worst word in the world,” she lamented.

"I love being comfortable myself — but if you also look lazy, or like you took 20 seconds to get ready, or undateable — get out of here. It’s gross. You should be comfortable but not look lazy.”

What about other fashion foibles we can think of? Needless to say, she has strong opinions to share on each and every one.

Q: They say successful people wear the same thing every day, like Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. What do you think of that?

A: I think that when you get to a certain place in your life, you can absolutely define a brand that says to the world who you are: Karl Lagerfeld and that low pony; Anna Wintour’s haircut; Rachel Zoe and her more bohemian look. But until you get there, you’ve got to tell people who you are. Until you’re sitting there with the account that Steve Jobs has – change it up.

Q: What do you think of couple dressing?

A: Oh, matching each other? If you’re both walking out looking like stuffed animals in a bed, that’s going to be weird. But if you’re walking out complementing each other, I don’t mind that. Let’s go back to our favourite couple who really did a don’t: Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in the denim duo. No. But recently I went to the Emmys and I wore a beautiful gown – one-shoulder with a feather skirt – and I had my husband wear a little bit of velvet that kind of picked up the feathers and had his own country flair. I think it’s nice to be your own individual and still want to get laid. Like, let’s go home and actually want to sleep with each other. Nobody wants to sleep with their brother. Nobody wants to sleep with their twin.

Q: What’s the protocol if you’re at an event and you spot someone in the same dress?

A: That b*tch is changing her clothes. No, I’m kidding! I’m so big on personality and individuality; I actually don’t think it’s a bad thing. Like, no two people could be the same. I could never be you; you could never be me. So, if we showed up in the same outfit, guess what? You’re going to rock it totally differently. And so, I think ladies need to stop comparing themselves with one another. That’s the most important message at the end of the day.

Q: You are all about fashion, but fashion does not have to be frivolous. You do a lot of work with causes, as well. Tell us about that.

A: To be honest with you, I’m not really the type to be a celebrity. I don’t care about looking fabulous all the time; I don’t care about always having interviews and lavish things. for me, being on television is really just a platform for using my voice. What I really care about is human trafficking. I care about the fact that there are brands that still employ children working for pennies a day and we are buying those pieces of clothing. Being a celebrity allows me to have a voice that is heard. So as long as I can still make change, I will always be doing work for How Do I Look. — TODAY
