SINGAPORE, July 29 — Selena Gomez caused a bit of a stir when it was reported that she covered up for her concert in Malaysia.
So how were her sartorial choices on Wednesday night when she held her first-ever concert in Singapore at the Singapore Indoor Stadium?
Well, she had a total of five outfit changes, and none really stood out in terms of being outrageously skimpy or raunchy.
In fact, she was even in an elegant black dress that would not look out of place at a formal event.
So much for sexiness from the teen idol turned sex kitten.
But she tried turning up the voltage for her performance instead as she belted out 18 songs, including her hits Hands To Myself, Kill Em With Kindness, Come & Get It and Love You Like A Love Song.
That got the crowd screaming and doing crazy hand actions throughout the concert. The singer was high-spirited and jolly, occasionally addressing the fans.
"I’m so happy to be here with you guys,” Gomez said to the audience, even talking about the time she had to cancel her 2014 concert because she was suffering from lupus.
"I was supposed to be here two years ago and now it’s my turn to be with you.”
With that, all was forgiven even though she appeared 40 minutes late.
(Thankfully, she had home-grown singer Gentle Bones as an opening act at 7pm who did a great job by delivering four songs with beat-boxing thrown in for good measure.)
She also worked the crowd with her dance moves, did throwbacks of her old music, such as Who Says, and slowed down the tempo with songs such as Nobody.
She seemed to do no wrong to most of her fans in the audience, who were mainly in their 20s and lapped up everything she said as she shared memories of her songs.
Cynics might say it was routined fare, but there was no denying the energy in the stadium. The concert hit its peak towards the end with her cover of Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics.
Enthusiastic fans turned the stadium into a huge dance floor as they bounced to I Want You To Know and a smashing remix of Revival.
I have to say it was nice to see this former Disney star as one cool, confident and bright woman, holding court in her own right.
It almost felt like a perfect Disney ending. — TODAY
