The ‘27 Club’ claims its newest member in Anton Yelchin

LOS ANGELES, June 20 — As the film world was left reeling from Anton Yelchin’s untimely demise in a freak car accident yesterday, many celebrity watchers couldn’t help but point out that the Star Trek actor died at 27 like many other famous faces.

He joins a long list that includes Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobin and Jimi Hendrix, whose deaths at that fateful age have made them ‘members’ of the so-called ‘27 club’.

Here’s a list of some of those illustrious names:

Brian Jones (February 28, 1942–July 3, 1969)

The founder and original leader of the Rolling Stones drowned in the swimming pool of his home in East Sussex, England.

Jimi Hendrix (November 27, 1942–September 18, 1970)

The electric guitar hero choked on his own vomit after a drink and drugs binge in London in 1970.

Janis Joplin (January 19, 1943–October 4, 1970)

The blues singer died of a heroin overdose at the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood.

Jim Morrison (December 8, 1943–July 3, 1971)

The enigmatic frontman for The Doors was found in the bathtub of a Paris apartment from an accidental heroin overdose.

Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKernan (September 8, 1945–March 8, 1973)

The founding member of the Grateful Dead died of a gastrointestinal haemorrhage at his home in Corte Madera, California.

Kurt Cobain (February 20, 1967–April 5, 1994)

The depressed lead singer of Nirvana killed himself at his home in Seattle.

Pete de Freitas (August 2, 1961–June 14, 1989)

Echo and the Bunnymen lost their drummer in a motorcycle accident in 1989.

Amy Winehouse (September 14, 1983–July 23, 2011)

The British R&B and soul singer died of alcohol poisoning at her London home.
