NEW YORK, May 4 — In case you didn’t already know, every year on May 4, Star Wars fans across all galaxies celebrate the franchise by wishing each other “May the fourth be with you”.
May 4 is the unofficial annual occasion for people to celebrate their love for the Star Wars saga thanks to the pun on the catch phrase “May the Force be with you” to “May the 4th be with you.”
According to Starwars.com, the unofficial Star Wars Day was first marked in 1979 after Margaret Thatcher won the election as Britain's first female prime minister.
After her historic win, her supporters took out an ad in a newspaper saying “May the fourth be with you Maggie. Congratulations.” Needless to say, that day took off from then on like the millennium falcon in hyper drive with grassroot celebrations as well as on social media.
Incidentally, May is also a notable month for the popular franchise with the original Star Wars having premiered on May 25, 1977.
If there isn’t any celebration in your area, you can follow #StarWarsDay or #MayThe4thBeWithYou on Twitter for a live stream of all the May 4 puns and memes that are being tweeted throughout the day.
