SINGAPORE, April 2 — Actor Charlie Cox says his interpretation of Marvel’s Daredevil is specific and appropriate for the Netflix hit series, and that it would be impossible to incorporate all the qualities of the popular character and his history as depicted in graphic novels since 1964.
Speaking to Malay Mail Online in a recent interview, Cox noted that there have been questions as to which version of Daredevil he was portraying on the small screen, and that there have been different depictions of the superhero in the comics over the past several decades.
“And the Matt Murdock (for the Netflix series) I believe was written by Drew Goddard in these first few scripts. There are issues, there are different runs in the comics that I think that to best represent our show… I think it was important to be specific rather than try and please everyone, I think that’s the danger.
Elektra (Elodie Yung) in Season 2 of ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’.
“You have to remember it’s me, I have been cast (so) I have to be within the realms of possibility for me,” he said during the interview, which was part of an on-going press tour to promote the second season of the show.
Goddard was the person responsible for the show’s first two episodes and helped shape the core of Daredevil/Murdock’s character in the first season of the series.
“What I meant by that if you read the comics, if you read them all from 1964, what you discover is that they change immensely from the era, writer, illustrator, editors.
Charlie Cox plays Daredevil/Matt Murdock in ‘Marvel's Daredevil’.
“Times change, characters change, the way they look, the way Matt looks changes, his voice changes… although obviously it’s a book, but the voice as in the way he talks, the way he’s written changes and so it was evident to me earlier on there’s no way you can be all of those Matt Murdocks,” Cox explained.
“I have to find the Matt Murdock that is appropriate for this show, for Netflix,” he stressed.
So will there be a third season for Daredevil? Cox prefers to keep fans guessing.
“I don’t know what the future holds, whether we do a third season or not. Obviously the next thing is the Defender... I must say at this point I’ve no idea what will be the storyline for the Defenders, I mean I guess they’re writing it… but obviously the Defenders means in some way Matt Murdock will be teaming up with some characters so one of the lessons he’s had to learn in Season 2 is that he’s had to learn to fight with someone else,” Cox says.
The Defenders is an upcoming Netflix series which will see Daredevil team up with other Marvel heroes like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
The first season of Jessica Jones has already been released on Netflix while the first season of Luke Cage is expected to be released in September.
All 13 episodes of Season 2 of Daredevil can now be streamed on Netflix, after they were released simultaneously on March 18.
Netflix was made available in Malaysia back in January, with subscription priced at between RM33 and RM51 a month.
The US video-streaming service has become increasingly popular over the years, with popular television shows being made for Netflix, including House of Cards, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Jessica Jones and Narcos.
