Writers Guild names ‘Annie Hall’ as funniest script

LOS ANGELES, Nov 12 — Oscar winning comedy “Annie Hall” has been voted funniest screenplay of all time by the Writers Guild of America.

The Woody Allen script, whose 1977 feature film starred Allen opposite Diane Keaton, emerged from the writers’ poll ahead of Billy Wilder’s “Some Like It Hot” (1959), Bill Murray comedy “Groundhog Day” (1993), 1980’s “Airplane!” and the Dustin Hoffman classic “Tootsie” (1982).

Allen co-wrote the treatment with frequent collaborator Marshall Brickman.

The oldest film on the 101-strong list was Charlie Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush” from 1925, which came in at 94th place.

Ensemble hit “Bridesmaids” (2011), written by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, was its newest in 16th place.

Rob Reiner, who wrote and directed 1984’s rock mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” hosted the November 11 announcement ceremony in Hollywood.

Spinal Tap’s lead guitarist had a custom amplifier that was so loud that its dials “all go to eleven” rather than the standard ten.

It was coincidence, suggests Variety, that Reiner’s iconic film was voted 11th funniest screenplay.
