LOS ANGELES, Sept 18 — Curious to know why Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes choose to name their daughter Esmeralda?

Mendes recently revealed to Wendy Williams, on her talk show, the unlikely origins of her baby girl’s name. She said it is a name both she and Gosling were drawn to.

“We love ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, we loved the name, the cartoon and the novel… it just kind of kept coming back to us. It’s actually a very popular Latin name, so it’s easy for my father and certain family members that still don’t speak English to pronounce. That was a good selling point.”

The couple celebrated Esmeralda’s first birthday with a low-key, family affair at their home in Los Angeles over the weekend. Esmeralda’s middle name is “Amada,” which means “beloved” in Spanish.
