LOS ANGELES, Sept 3 — Things are certainly looking brighter for Malaysian born comic Ronny Chieng who is set to join the “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah”.
Chieng joins Desi Lydic and Roy Wood Jr as the show’s newest correspondents. “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” premieres on September 28 as Trevor Noah takes over from Jon Stewart.
The job is a big deal for a comedian, with former correspondents like John Oliver and Stephen Colbert going on to have their own successful shows and a massive international following.
“I was literally on tour and I got the call,” said Chieng. “I’m going from my stand up straight to the show and I have to move to New York on Tuesday.”
Chieng, who has worked with incoming host Trevor Noah (Jon Stewart’s replacement) before, scored the gig after submitting an audition tape filmed in his Melbourne home.
“It was a piece I wrote myself. I did it to camera and I was lucky enough to be asked back to do a live audition in New York.
Born in Johor, Chieng grew up in Singapore and studied at the University of Melbourne to be a commercial lawyer until he won the annual campus comedy competition in his fifth year and started thinking of himself as a comedian.
Chieng’s career began to take off in 2012 when he was named one of the “Top 10 Rising Comedians in Australia” by The Age, the Herald Sun and The Sydney Morning Herald and received the “Best Newcomer” award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for his debut stand-up special “The Ron Way”.
Since then, Chieng has gone on to perform sold-out tours in Australia and appeared at numerous international comedy festivals, including the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the New Zealand International Comedy Festival.
