LONDON, July 1 — We promise you aren’t being Rickrolled: “Never Gonna Give You Up” singer Rick Astley has indeed covered Mark Ronson’s and Bruno Mars’s hit single “Uptown Funk” over the weekend at Let’s Rock London.
The 49-year-old’s vocals were on point and he and his band “funked” things up with a disco karaoke vibe. Mid-way through, Astley can be seen asking the crowd in his best white-man soul voice: “Is you in the mood? Is you feelin’ funky?”
For those who don’t know, Astley is a British singer whose 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up” was a major hit — but he may be even better known for becoming an Internet meme with the “Rickrolling” phenomenon.
Here’s how it works: A person provides a link to some everyday topic; you click on it and are instead taken to Astley’s music video for “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
According to Time, the singer is said to have a sense of humour about the prank, which won him a “Best Act Ever” distinction from Internet users at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Rick Astley is more than a meme: He's a man, a performer who is still out there giving it his all.
