JUNE 20 — Happy Father’s Day to the dads we know and love! While Western (fictional) dads get plenty of love in the media, we think Asian dads need love too.

Here are some of our favourite dads from the TV and movie world:

1. Louis Huang, “Fresh Off the Boat”

What makes Louis endearing that he is always supportive of his kids and never dismissive of their hopes and dreams. Even with Eddie’s knack for getting into trouble, Papa Huang is always there to back him up.

1. Chaudhry Baldev Singh, “Dilwale Dulhani Le Jayenge”

The final scene of the film where Baldev gives his daughter, Simran, his blessing before she runs off to elope with her lover is probably the sweetest moment in the whole film.

1. Na Dae Ho, “One Warm Word”

While his children grapple with their messy love lives and finances, Dae Ho proves to be the anchor of kindness and strength they need.

1. Pak Atan, “Rabun”

The late Yasmin Ahmad’s love letter to her parents has us falling in love with them by the end. Pak Atan’s devotion to Mak Inom is touching and sweet, making us understand just why Yasmin considers her parents one of her greatest inspirations.

1. Tatsuo Kusakabe, “My Neighbour Totoro” 

It’s hard not to like Tatsuo and his gentleness with his children. Besides Totoro, he is one of the most endearing characters in the film.
