Jean-Luc Godard recently won the National Society of Film Critics’ Best Picture award with his experimental and divisive “Goodbye to Language” and has already seen one of his older films go through the remake process.
“Breathless” was instrumental in establishing the French New Wave upon its release in 1960 and, in 1983, it was Richard Gere who replaced Jean-Paul Belmondo in the leading role, opposite Valérie Kaprisky instead of Jean Seberg.
But where “Breathless” was a romantic thriller, “Alphaville” instead revels in futuristic visions and a satirical message.
In the original film, special agent Lemmy Caution (American actor Eddie Constantine) is dispatched to the computer-controlled Alphaville in order to retrieve a previous agent, deal with the city’s creator and eliminate its controlling computer.
With Byers directing for Studiocanal, as The Wrap reports, he’ll be working from a script provided by Franc. Reyes, who wrote and directed John Leguizamo films “Empire” and “The Ministers.”
Byers, praised for his work on early episodes of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” has more recently been cinematographer for TV series “Switched at Birth” (ABC), “Hawthorne” (TNT) and “Three Rivers” (CBS). — AFP-Relaxnews
