LONDON, Nov 14 — The Queen of England will be the protagonist of “The Crown,” a period drama due to premiere on Netflix in 2016. The series hails from Peter Morgan and Stephen Daldry, two major names in British cinema.

After several months of speculation, Netflix has confirmed “The Crown,” ordering the first season of 10 episodes. Inspired by Morgan’s stage play “The Audience,” the series will “tell the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world — Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street — and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century,” Netflix reveals.

Opening in 1952, when the 25-year-old princess took the helm of the monarchy upon the death of her father, George VI, the first season will explore Queen Elizabeth II’s personal and public life, including her efforts to forge a relationship with the war-hardened prime minister Winston Churchill. The role of the young Queen has been offered to British actress Claire Foy, seen in “Being Human” and “Crossbones.”

Due to premiere on Netflix in 2016, “The Crown” is written by Morgan and will be helmed by Daldry. The former is the scribe behind several historical drama features, including “The Queen,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “Frost/Nixon” and “The Other Boleyn Girl.” Daldry, meanwhile, is known for his features “Billy Elliot,” “The Hours,” “The Reader” and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” His latest film “Trash” is currently showing in select countries. — AFP/Relaxnews
