‘Globe to Globe’: Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ to tour every single country in the world

LONDON, April 20 ― William Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London is embarking on an ambitious plan to take “Hamlet” to every single country in the world on a two-year tour.

The “unprecedented theatrical adventure” opens in London on April 23 this year, 450 years after the birth of Shakespeare, and the final curtain will fall on April 23, 2016 — the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death.

To help finance the event, the prestigious theatre launched a campaign on the crowd funding website Kickstarter this week, with the aim of raising £200,000 (RM1,087,000).

In what is the biggest Shakespeare tour ever attempted, a troupe of 12 actors and four staff will cross the seven continents to play in palaces, Mayan ruins and on beaches across the world.

The group will perform a “fresh, pared-down” version of the show, lasting just 2 hours 40 minutes. Each of the actors has had to learn a new musical instrument to make up for the small cast.

The campaign has been launched in an attempt to cover the costs of the tour for those countries that cannot afford to host the theatre group but are keen to participate in the project.

“It’s about reaching all those people who would not normally see a Globe show or even a Shakespeare show,” explains Stage Manager Dave McEvoy.

And the theatre is hoping that the universal themes of the play, one of Shakespeare’s most famous, will strike a chord with audiences everywhere.
