LONDON, March 30 — London-based producer Ben Khan has amassed a major online following with the release of four electro soul tracks over the past year. His latest, “Youth,” offers a slightly different sound and heralds the release of a debut EP in May.

Who? Ben Khan is a 21-year-old artist and producer whose genre-defying electronic R&B/soul is said to be informed by his cultural heritage — his father is a Kashmir-born artist specializing in raw design and textile — as well as his experience growing up in London and a love of Western film. The multi-talented artist also makes videos for his tracks and has his own record imprint, Blessed Vice, on which he'll release his debut EP.

Why the buzz? Khan's first track, the demo “Drive (Part 1),” surfaced in July to enthusiastic reviews. The track was accompanied by little biographical info, as was the next, “Eden,” leaving much to listeners' imagination. He drew immediate comparisons to Jai Paul, for both his sound and his enigmatic presence.

Each track has introduced new additions to Khan's range, but common elements — and subjects of praise — are his breathy, falsetto vocals, driving bass lines, glitchy effects and guitar licks, seemlessly blending soul, funk, R&B and blues with electronica. I Found Music, reviewing Khan's first two tracks, praised the “funky guitars that would make Prince red with envy, and one of the most soulful voices this side of the Atlantic.”

Repeat Button offered up a rave review of “Eden”: “He's so on it; mad sound effects, deep, warped bass and a vibe of sex so strong you can almost smell it.” In December Khan released “Savage,” which Scientists of Sound called “nothing short of mesmeric. Amongst the ocean of slinky basslines and experimental horns comes a living, breathing soul fed through the breathy vocals of Khan.” By the time Khan's fourth track, “Youth,” was released last week, Khan has already amassed an impressive 1.2 million SoundCloud plays. The new track, an uplifting anthem that's a departure from his previous tracks, was described by SoulCulture as a “catchy, addictive and almost euphoric musical journey.”

What to listen to?  The “1992” EP will include newest track “Youth” as well as remastered versions of Khan's three previous tracks. For now, “Youth” can be purchased on iTunes in advance of the full release on May 5. Meanwhile, head to SoundCloud to hear “Youth” as well as “Drive (Part 1),” “Eden” and “Savage.” On YouTube you can find self-made videos for his first three tracks. Where to see? No tour dates are currently announced. Keep track by following Ben Khan on FacebookTwitter or at blessedvice1992.tumblr.com.  — AFP-Relaxnews
