HOLLYWOOD, Jan 27 — In theatres since Christmas, Martin Scorsese’s comedy earned the title of the highest grossing film at the worldwide box office this weekend for the first time, according to Rentrak.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a drug-fuelled and greedy stock trader, “The Wolf of Wall Street” earned US$36 million (RM120 million) across 27 territories during the weekend ending January 26. The film, in the running for five Oscars, has now earned US$183.03 million in total since its release.

“Frozen” occupies second place with US$29.24 million in revenues this weekend. The animated film, still showing in 53 territories, is ahead of “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.” The spy thriller starring Chris Pine grossed US$23.10 million worldwide during its second weekend in theatres.

“Ride Along” slipped to fourth place this weekend with revenues of US$21.91 million. The comedy featuring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart is still sitting comfortably atop the domestic box office, where it earned US$21.2 million. — AFP/Relaxnews
