LOS ANGELES, July 18 — James Franco (picture) will make a cameo appearance in two episodes of the American TV series, whose second season debuts September 17 on Fox.

Another surprising choice from James Franco: the Hollywood star has accepted the role of Dr. Paul Leotard, a charismatic doctor who replaces the show’s leading lady, Mindy, while she leaves her practice to volunteer in Haiti.

A former male model, the character turned to obstetrics after a pregnant woman saved his life during a Fashion Week show.

Franco, whose talent for TV was first revealed in the series “Freaks and Geeks”, likes to return to the small screen every now and then.
