KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 — The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) will assist Yayasan Usman Awang to bring back the writer’s literary works from abroad.

Chairman Datuk Abdul Manan Ismail said the corporation will also compile the literary works into a book for future reference.

“We will register these pieces to ensure that they are not plagiarised or used without compensating the writer (picture) or his heir with royalty,” he told reporters at a news conference after launching the Collective Management Organisation (CMO) in Copyright Seminar, here today.

Yayasan Usman Awang, which was recently established to gather literary works by the country’s writers to facilitate research by literary scholars inside and outside the country.

Meanwhile, commenting on dissatisfaction among users of copyrighted work on the royalty tariff imposed, he hoped they would refer to the Copyright Tribunal to resolve such cases.

The seminar, organised for the first time with help from the Japan Copyright Office (JCO), aimed to share experiences and exchange views for the development of a more transparent and efficient CMO.

Abdul Manan said the corporation’s main focus was to develop a comprehensive copyright protection system and encourage efficient and transparent management from CMO in Malaysia.

“The seminar is an important platform for local CMO to learn from the land of the rising sun and their experiences,” he said.

The CMO is a company responsible for collecting royalty from consumers for copyright owners.

There are four CMO registered with MyIPO namely Music Author’s Copyright Protection (MACP), Public Performance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PPM), Recording Performers Malaysia Berhad (RPM) and Performers Right and Interest Society of Malaysia Berhad (Prism). — Bernama
