SUBANG JAYA, Sept 3 — Proton sold more cars to Malaysian buyers in August than in any other month in its history, while total group sales reached 22,632 units — its strongest monthly performance since January 2010.

Sales were 22.7 per cent higher than in July, driven by steady demand for its petrol models, record electric vehicle deliveries and stronger exports.

For the first eight months of 2026, Proton sold 141,421 vehicles, up 40.2 per cent from the same period last year.

The carmaker estimates it captured 27.9 per cent of all new cars sold in Malaysia in August, lifting its share for the year so far to 25.6 per cent.

Deputy chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa said the record month reflects the confidence customers have in Proton’s models.

“At the same time, we are making strong gains in our export business,” he said in a press statement today.

He added that the e.MAS brand has also taken a dominant share of the electric vehicle market.

The Saga remained Proton’s top seller with 7,347 units in August, taking its eight-month total to nearly 60,000 units — a 33.3 per cent jump from a year earlier.

The S70 sedan recorded its best monthly performance with 3,235 units sold. Its sales for the year now stand at 17,953 units, already surpassing the model’s full-year total for 2025.

The X50 compact SUV stayed Malaysia’s best-selling SUV with 2,274 units delivered.

Proton’s e.MAS electric brand sold a record 6,047 units during the month. The e.MAS 5 led the way with 4,818 units, setting a new national monthly record for a single EV model.

Exports also gained momentum, reaching 2,477 units — the highest monthly figure since January 2011. 

Proton has been assembling more Geely vehicles at its Tanjong Malim plant in Perak for overseas markets, pushing export sales for the year to 6,059 units, already above the 6,000 units exported in all of 2025.
