SHAH ALAM, Nov 25 — Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (Modenas) unit Edaran Modenas Sdn Bhd (EMOS) aims to capture more than 10 per cent and 50 per cent for the 125cc and 200-250cc categories of the scooter market respectively by 2017.
This is in line with today’s launch by Modenas, a subsidiary of DRB-HICOM Bhd, of the all-new Karisma 125 and Elegan 250 as part of its business expansion plan to strengthen its position in the local two-wheeler scene.

The event also witnessed the launch of the KYMCO Downtown 250i scooter.
DRB-HICOM Group Managing Director Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar said the venture with Taiwan’s Kwang Yang Motor Co Ltd (KYMCO) is part of efforts to achieve the 2017 scooter market share target.
The Karisma 125, Elegan 250 and KYMCO Downtown 250i are priced at RM5,278.80, RM13,599.80 and RM22,790 respectively.
"The 2017 sales target for the Karisma 125 is 2,000 units, Elegan 250 is 500 units and KYMCO Downtown 250i is 250 units,” Syed Faisal Albar told reporters at the launch here today.
Over the past three years, scooters have accounted for 13 per cent of the country’s total industry volume of motorcycle sales of 60,000 units.
"The segment is expected to grow further over the next five years, with a five per cent average annual increase,” said Syed Faisal.
Syed Faisal also said since the launch of their first moped in 1996, Modenas and EMOS have continued to take proactive steps to explore opportunities to both widen their product range and identify strategic partnerships.
"We are excited about the dynamic collaboration.
"Both KYMCO and DRB-HICOM can leverage on each other’s strengths and experience, encompassing vehicle design and development, components manufacturing, vehicle manufacturing, assembly and importation, to vehicle inspection, distribution, sales and after-sales activities,” said Syed Faisal. — Bernama
