Trade data plus for ringgit against US$ but makes no dent on other currencies

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 — The ringgit ended higher against the US dollar today following Malaysia’s encouraging trade data released today.

At 5pm, the ringgit was quoted at 4.2215/2265 against 4.2250/2310 yesterday.

The dealer said Malaysia’s exports and trade surplus in October were better than expected, which helped support the ringgit.

October exports grew by 16.7 per cent, its first double-digit growth for the year and the highest growth since April 2014.

On the global front, he said, traders were cautious about the US jobs data, which would be released today, and the outcome of today’s Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries meeting.

The ringgit was lower against other major currencies. It fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.0197/0254 from 2.9941/9996 yesterday and eased against the yen to 3.4369/4421 from 3.4211/4267.

It fell against the British pound to 6.3762/3858 from 6.3041/3152 and eased against the euro to 4.5879/5951 from 4.4675/4747. — Bernama
