KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) denied today rumours that Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz has resigned from her position as the central bank’s governor.
“No. It’s business as usual. She’s still in the bank. It’s not true,” a spokesman from the central bank told Malay Mail Online when contacted for comment on the rumours.
It is unclear where the rumours originated, but international news agency Reuters said the rumours of Zeti’s resignation had been circulating in local media and financial markets.
Reuters said the rumours said that Zeti, who is part of a special government taskforce probing state-owned firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), was under pressure to quit the central bank post.
Local news portal The Star Online said BNM had similarly denied that Zeti had suffered a heart attack, with a spokesman from the bank saying that the 67-year-old was fine and had gone in to work as usual.
Zeti has also been the target of other rumours, with the Internet abuzz with speculation two days ago that the police were allegedly probing her and several other BNM officials under Section 124 of the Penal Code.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has rubbished rumours of a police probe on Zeti as untrue.
Zeti, who became the first woman to hold the post of BNM governor, is the seventh person in this position.
She has been serving in this position since her appointment in May, 2000.
