KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 — Malaysia’s vibrant private sector economy and stable political environment have provided the opportunity for the country to emerge as a gateway for China’s investments in Asean, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said these factors position Malaysia in a more competitive environment and make the country a stepping-stone for China’s investments in the region.

“China will also be able to tap into our uniquely multi-cultural talent pool that is a reflection of the world’s greatest civilisations and religions, which is an advantage for a better understanding of the region,” he said in a speech at the World Chinese Economic Forum (WCEF) Hi-Tea and Special Conferment Ceremony here today.

The relationship between Malaysia and China has been established for the past 40 years based on a strong bond of mutual respect and a vision to grow a partnership of progress for both nations, he added.

“We have been able to boost our infrastructural development via a sustainable public-private partnership which is evidenced by the launch of the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park in 2013.

“We are also looking forward to the completion of the 5,000 km.

Singapore-Kunming Rail Link over the next few years, which could further enhance trade ties between China and Malaysia along with the Asean region,” Liow said.

As chairman of Asean this year, Malaysia will play a leading role in shaping the future direction of the region and aim towards a more ‘people-centred Asean’ where moderation will be widely practised and diplomatic means will be employed in the face of any conflict, he said.

“With the commencement of the Asean Economic Community (AEC), the government will also shoulder greater responsibility in efforts to widen the scope for development and cooperation, especially between Asean and China,” he said.

Liow earlier presented Lifetime Achievement Awards to Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Council Chairman Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik and CIMB Group Chairman Datuk Seri Nazir Abdul Razak at the function.

The awards recognise their significant contributions to their respective fields, and highlight the purpose of the WCEF besides helping to position Malaysia as well. — Bernama
