KL shares close down 0.40pc, MAS in spotlight

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 — Bursa Malaysia ended lower today with the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) closing 7.31 points or 0.40 per cent easier at 1,831.98, on continous profit taking activity among heavyweight stocks.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS), which convened its extraordinary general meeting (EGM) today, led actives lists with 781.29 million units traded. Its price swung from 18.5 sen to 27 sen, before closing half-a-sen better at 26.5 sen.

Among FBM KLCI components, Tenaga Nasional led the laggards, dipping 44 sen to RM13.02, while Axiata dipped eight sen to RM6.99, British American Tobacco tumbled RM2.36 to RM65.50, CIMB Group edged down six sen to RM6.35 and Genting declined seven sen to RM9.58.

On the broader market, losers outpaced gainers by 436 to 364, with 328 counters unchanged, 519 counters untraded and 19 others suspended.

Total volume expanded to 2.87 billion shares worth RM2.52 billion from 2.26 billion shares worth RM2.02 billion yesterday.

A dealer said despite an upbeat overnight Wall Street, overall sentiment in Asia was cautious amid concerns over falling oil prices and uncertainty on the monetary easing plan in Europe.

“Profit taking activities here were following the rally last week.

“With the overnight policy rate probably remaining unchanged, the local lead could be tomorrow,” he said, referring to September export data due for release tomorrow. — Bernama
