KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 — The ringgit opened slightly lower against the US dollar today on lack of buying interest for the local unit, a dealer said. At 9.31am, the ringgit was quoted at 3.2140/2170 against the greenback from 3.2115/2145 at 5pm yesterday.
“The ringgit will rebound and continue to improve following the positive first-quarter Gross Domestic Product figures released by Bank Negara Malaysia recently,” the dealer said. Malaysia’s GDP grew 6.2 per cent in the quarter under review anchored by domestic demand and a turnaround in net exports. Against major currencies, the local note was traded mixed. The domestic currency rose against the Singapore dollar to 2.5681/5715 from 2.5684/5710 and gained against the yen to 3.1678/1710 from 3.1684/1717.
Against the British pound, the ringgit depreciated to 5.4021/4084 from 5.3969/3029, and versus the euro, it weakened to 4.4064/4112 from 4.4023/4068 previously. — Bernama
