Ringgit traded slightly lower against US dollar in early session

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 — The ringgit was traded slightly lower against the US dollar in the early session today despite expectations of economic recovery in China, Europe and the United States, dealers said.

At 9.25am, the ringgit was quoted at 3.2970/2990 for a US dollar against  Friday’s close at 3.2830/2865.

Dealers said purchasing managers’ data showed better-than-expected growth  in the euro zone, a rebound in China’s manufacturing sector and US’ manufacturing activity rising to a five-month high last month.

“The ringgit came under pressure despite data showing that major economies returned to growth,” a dealer said.

Meanwhile, the ringgit was traded lower against all other major currencies.

The local unit depreciated against the Singapore dollar to 2.5863/5895 from 2.5787/5813 on Friday and was little changed against the Japanese yen to 3.3458/3489 from 3.3473/3512 last week.

Against the British pound, the local currency weakened to 5.1156/1204 from 5.0854/0918 last week and fell against the euro to 4.3527/3567 from 4.3477/3533 on Friday. — Bernama
