KL shares lower mid-morning

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — Share prices on Bursa Malaysia was lower mid-morning today, in line with the dip in most regional market. 

At 11.11am, the benchmark index was down 20.36 points to 1,724.49, after opening 17.51 points easier at 1,743.49.

Losses in heavyweights dragged the FBM KLCI to remain in the red. Leading the heavyweights were Maybank and CIMB with both shedding six sen each to RM9.94 and RM7.56, respectively.   

Asian markets continued to retreat amid jitters in investors’ sentiment as the US Federal Reserve is expected to taper its asset-buying programme next month.

Across Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was 0.33 per cent lower at 13,380.25, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index shed 0.47 per cent to 21,715.99 and Singapore’s Straits Times Index shed 1.07 per cent to 3,075.64. 

On Bursa Malaysia, the Finance Index fell 181 points to 16,271.36, the Industrial Index was 22.64 points lower at 2,925.42 and the Plantation Index eased 77.07 points to 8,107.84.           

The FBM Emas Index reduced 158.81 points to 11,998.99, the FBMT100 Index slipped 151.43 points to 11,738.01, and the FBM70 Index decreased 229.4 points to 13,672.79.

The FBM Ace Index declined 96.22 points to 5,251.53.                     

Losers hammered gainers 710 to 38, with 169 counters unchanged, 668 untraded and 18 others suspended.

Volume stood at 803.599 million shares valued at RM954.756 million.      

Among actives, MAS fell 1.5 sen to 33 sen, Flonic Hi-Tec eased 2.5 sen to 15.5 sen and Sumatec Resources inched down half-a-sen 75.5 sen.            

Of the heavyweights, Axiata lost 10 sen to RM6.55, TNB slipped 16 sen to RM8.70 and YTL Corp edged down one sen to RM1.58. – Bernama
