GEORGE TOWN, Oct 30 — The Penang government hopes to sell the first industrial plots on Silicon Island as early as the first quarter of 2027, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He said the development on Silicon Island will focus on the 700-acre Green Tech Park which is planned as a green, smart and sustainable high-tech industrial hub in line with environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.
“The sale of the first industrial plots is expected to begin as early as the first quarter of 2027 to attract high-value investments, particularly in the semiconductor, automated test equipment, integrated circuit design and medical device sectors,” he said when tabling the Supply Bill at the state legislative assembly today.
He said the first factory in the Green Tech Park is expected to begin operations by 2028 while creating high-skilled employment opportunities for Penangites.
“The development of Silicon Island is not merely about providing new land for industry, but is also a long-term investment that generates benefits for the local economy,” he said.
He said a total of 4,531 contracts worth RM1.92 billion had been awarded to local contractors and businesses as of September 30.
On the development of Silicon Island, he said a total of 500 acres had been reclaimed, equivalent to 39.4 per cent of the 1,270-acre Phase 1 as of October.
In May this year, he said a 64.85-acre site was also prepared for the Mutiara Line LRT depot.
