LABUAN, Oct 30 — An eatery operator here was compounded after charging an additional RM3 for a serving of soup that was not listed on the restaurant’s displayed price menu.

KPDN Labuan director Junaidah Arbain said the action followed a consumer complaint lodged through the ministry’s e-Aduan portal, with an inspection at about 10am finding that the displayed price list included additional charges for rice and noodles but did not specify the price of extra soup.

“Following the non-compliance detected, we issued a compound to the operator under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Price Marking for Goods and Charges for Services) Order 2020, under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011,” she told Bernama today.

Junaidah said individuals convicted of an offence under the order could be fined up to RM50,000, while companies could face fines of up to RM100,000.

She reminded restaurant and food outlet operators to display their menus and all additional charges completely, clearly and prominently, with price lists and charges stated in Bahasa Melayu or accompanied by a translation if presented in another language, and prices indicated in ringgit or sen.

She said that transparent pricing was essential to protecting consumer rights, as customers were entitled to know the cost of goods and services before placing an order or making a purchase.

“KPDN Labuan would continue to intensify enforcement and monitoring activities to safeguard consumer interests, and members of the public are encouraged to report business-related non-compliance through the ministry’s official complaint channels,” she added. — Bernama
