MELAKA, Oct 30 — The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has inspected 28 nomination and official vote-tallying centres ahead of the 16th Melaka state election.
Melaka JBPM director Mohd Zaidi Ma’at said the inspections were conducted at the request of the Election Commission (EC) to ensure that fire safety facilities at the centres were in good working order.
“The inspections cover fire safety systems and emergency exits to ensure that safety at nomination and polling centres is given due attention.
“So far, all centres inspected have met fire safety requirements, and we are prepared to respond to any emergencies throughout the election process,” he told Bernama after the Melaka JBPM monthly assembly at the department’s state headquarters in Bukit Katil here today.
Mohd Zaidi said the department had earlier conducted joint simulation exercises with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the EC in Masjid Tanah to prepare for possible incidents, including riots, fires and other emergencies.
“The exercises aim to ensure that the agencies involved are prepared to coordinate their response in the event of an incident requiring assistance from JBPM,” he said.
Mohd Zaidi added that all fire stations in Melaka had been placed on standby to respond to potential emergencies, including fires and floods, throughout the state election.
The EC has set November 14 as polling day for the 16th Melaka state election, with nomination day tomorrow and early voting on November 10. — Bernama
