PUTRAJAYA, Oct 30 — The government is expected to declassify historical documents, particularly those classified as official secrets under the Official Secrets Act, as soon as possible, said Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim raised the matter during the second 2026 National Historians Council meeting held earlier this week.
“The Cabinet agreed with several views put forward by historians on the need to establish a general policy on the declassification of historical documents currently classified as official secrets under the Official Secrets Act.
“The prime minister expressed the view that this should be implemented as soon as possible, but carefully,” he said at his weekly post-Cabinet press conference here.
Fahmi said the matter would first be examined, including by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), to assess its implications and determine how access to historical documents could be facilitated.
“We will consult the Attorney General’s Chambers on several aspects. We will also consult the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Home Ministry.
“However, documents that are not particularly sensitive but were previously classified under the Official Secrets Act may be easier to declassify,” he said.
Separately, Fahmi said the Cabinet had agreed to proposals by the Transport Ministry and the Housing and Local Government Ministry to amend the guidelines on the management of abandoned vehicles.
He said the move followed various feedback and complaints about the existing guidelines and disposal process, which could take too long to complete.
“There is also a need for better coordination, particularly among the relevant agencies. The process will be continued by the Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Transport Ministry,” he said.
Fahmi also said Anwar had directed the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Communications Ministry, particularly through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to take action against fraud and scams on e-commerce platforms.
“MCMC held a meeting with all major e-commerce platform operators several weeks ago.
“Meanwhile, enforcement agencies will hold a coordination meeting in the coming weeks to streamline joint action in addressing problems faced by consumers using e-commerce platforms,” he said.
Fahmi said the prime minister had instructed the relevant ministries and agencies to prioritise the matter and take immediate action.
