KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 — A cabin crew member previously charged with drink-driving over a fatal collision that killed one person and injured another has now been charged with murder.
Iman Nafiz Fong Sabirin, 26, nodded to indicate he understood the charge after it was read out before Magistrate MS Arunjothi. No plea was recorded as murder trials fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court, FMT reported.
He is accused of murdering 29-year-old Faris Irfan Fazli along Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar, heading towards Jalan Parlimen, at 4.09am on October 24.
The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the death penalty or between 30 and 40 years' imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
Two days earlier, Iman had claimed trial before Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim to driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 64mg per 100ml, above the legal limit of 50mg, and causing Faris's death.
That charge, framed under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987, carries 10 to 15 years' imprisonment and a fine ranging between RM50,000 and RM100,000.
He also faces a charge under Section 44(1A)(b) of the same Act for causing injury to Zakiyamani Zakaria, 49, punishable by seven to 10 years in prison and a fine between RM30,000 and RM50,000.
During proceedings today, deputy public prosecutor Fadhly Zamry informed the court that the prosecution would update magistrate Atiqah on November 30 regarding the status of the two earlier traffic charges, in light of the murder charge.
Iman, who was denied bail, was represented by counsel Anif Rafih.
