GEORGE TOWN, Oct 12 — A man was injured in a fire at an electric vehicle (EV) battery storage facility in Jalan Jelutong here yesterday.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of operations John Sagun Francis said Eugene Chow Hao Jie, 31, sustained injuries while attempting to escape from the facility.

He said the victim received initial treatment from the department’s Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team before being taken to Penang Hospital for further treatment.

“We received an emergency call at 3.42pm and immediately dispatched a fire engine from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station to the scene, where firefighters found a fire involving an EV battery storage facility measuring about 10 square feet.

“The fire was fully extinguished at 4.10pm, after which firefighters conducted inspection and overhaul operations to ensure that no hazards remained at the scene,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Fourteen personnel from the Jalan Perak, Lebuh Pantai and Paya Terubong fire stations were involved in the operation, with assistance from the Mount Erskine and Perak Lane Volunteer Fire Brigades and the police.

The operation ended at 5.57pm, and the case was referred to the fire investigation team for further investigation. — Bernama
