SHAH ALAM, Oct 10 — The driver of a lorry that crashed into 11 other vehicles at a traffic light junction in Alam Budiman yesterday has tested positive for drugs, police said today.
According to Bernama, Shah Alam police chief ACP Sarudin Samah said a urine screening test conducted on the 51-year-old driver found traces of amphetamine and methamphetamine.
He said the driver was detained to assist investigations under Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and was expected to be remanded at the Shah Alam Court today.
Preliminary investigations found that the driver claimed to have experienced brake problems while travelling downhill from Puncak Perdana towards Puncak Alam at about 4.20pm.
Sarudin said the lorry subsequently veered into the opposite lane and crashed into 11 vehicles waiting at the traffic lights at the Alam Budiman three-way junction along Persiaran Mokhtar Dahari.
A 58-year-old man driving a Subaru XV sport utility vehicle suffered serious head injuries and was receiving treatment in the red zone of UiTM Hospital Puncak Alam.
His 53-year-old wife and their 17-year-old grandson, who were travelling in the same vehicle, were also hospitalised and reported to be in stable condition.
Another motorist, a 29-year-old man driving a Perodua Myvi, sustained bodily injuries but was reported to be in stable condition.
Footage of the crash, showing a lorry travelling against the flow of traffic before colliding with several vehicles at the junction, went viral on social media yesterday.
Police urged anyone with information about the incident to contact investigating officer Inspector Abdul Nasser Peping at 012-286 3875. — Bernama
