SUBANG JAYA, Oct 6 — An e-hailing driver tested positive for methamphetamine in a urine screening test after a crash on the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) that killed a 22-year-old female student from the Maldives, Harian Metro reported.
The 37-year-old driver was carrying two Maldivian women when his Perodua Ativa collided with a Proton S70 near the PJS Toll Plaza at about 8.48pm on Sunday, according to Subang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azlan Wan Mamat.
Police said the Ativa spun and overturned in the middle of the road following the impact.
“One of the passengers was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was injured,” Wan Azlan was quoted as saying.
Both women, aged 22, were students at a private higher education institution in the Klang Valley.
According to police investigations, the Proton S70, driven by a 34-year-old local man, was heading towards the RFID lane when the rear right side of the car was struck by the Ativa from the right.
Wan Azlan said urine screening tests were carried out on both drivers following the crash.
The e-hailing driver tested positive for methamphetamine, also known locally as syabu, he said.
A Shah Alam Magistrates’ Court subsequently granted police a four-day remand order against the driver to assist investigations.
“The case is being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and the investigation papers are expected to be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor tomorrow for further instructions,” Wan Azlan said.
The body of the victim was taken to the Serdang Hospital Forensic Department for a post-mortem examination.
Police have urged witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage of the crash to contact investigating officer Inspector Azizul Hakim Roslan at 011-2891 4495 or the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at the Subang Jaya district police headquarters.
