JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 30 — A man accused of driving a stolen lorry against traffic and ramming a pursuing police car in Pasir Gudang has been remanded for three days to assist police investigations.
The local man, in his 30s, was escorted by police to the Johor Bahru court complex at about 8.30am today for a remand application.
Magistrate Tan Chiew King granted the three-day remand order after the suspect was brought before the Magistrate’s Court.
Police said yesterday that the suspect was arrested after allegedly fleeing in a lorry stolen from Plentong.
He allegedly drove against the flow of traffic in an attempt to evade arrest, leading several police vehicles on a pursuit spanning about 100km.
During the chase, the lorry allegedly rammed a police car after the driver refused to stop.
The suspect was eventually arrested in the Tanjung Langsat area of Pasir Gudang.
Seri Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said a search of the suspect found a transparent plastic packet containing a substance believed to be illicit drugs.
He said a background check showed the suspect had 27 previous criminal and drug-related records.
“The suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine abuse.
“The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties and Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving,” he said in a statement.
A 35-second video showing several police cars pursuing a green lorry being driven dangerously in Pasir Gudang was widely shared on social media yesterday.
