JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 30 — A 69-year-old man accidentally crashed his Toyota Camry into two vehicles and an eatery after apparently pressing the accelerator by mistake while reversing in Taman Daya here yesterday.

Johor Bahru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffie said police were alerted to the incident after videos of it went viral on social media at about 2.20pm.

He said preliminary investigations found that the local man was about to drive home after having breakfast at an eatery in Jalan Daya when the incident occurred.

“While attempting to reverse his Toyota Camry car, the man is believed to have mistakenly accelerated the car’s pedal, causing the vehicle to jolt backward and crashed into a Proton Saga parked behind him.

“Following the initial collision, the man panicked and floored the accelerator again, causing the vehicle to reverse further and crashed into another white Toyota Camry located in front of the eatery.

“The affected vehicles continued moving before crashing and coming to a stop inside of the eatery’s premises,” he said in a statement late last night.

The two other cars and the eatery were damaged in the incident, but no injuries were reported.

Azrul Hisham said the incident was believed to have been caused by the driver’s negligence while operating the accelerator, resulting in him losing control of the vehicle.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Videos and images showing the aftermath of the accident were circulated on social media yesterday.

A similar accident occurred about two weeks ago in Pandan Perdana, Ampang Jaya, where an 89-year-old driver allegedly pressed the accelerator while attempting to park, causing his vehicle to hit a motorcyclist, a flower seller and a pedestrian.

In the September 12 incident, all three victims reportedly sustained injuries and received treatment at a nearby hospital.
