KLUANG, Sept 18 — A 19-year-old student pursuing studies in Singapore was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with reckless and dangerous driving over a crash that killed four family members last June.

Goh Yin Zun pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him through an interpreter before Magistrate Norasidah A Rahman, Berita Harian reported.

According to the charge sheet, Goh is accused of driving a Mercedes-Benz in a manner dangerous to the public at KM27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam at around 1.19pm on June 1.

The charge was framed under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a jail term of up to five years and a fine of up to RM15,000 upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Noratini Nik Azam initially proposed bail at RM20,000.

In mitigation, defence counsel Mohd Daud Ismail and Hang Lee Ying appealed for a reduced amount, urging the court to consider that the accused is a youthful offender currently pursuing a diploma in business studies in Singapore.

Mohd Daud added that Goh had extended full cooperation to investigators throughout his initial remand period and subsequent release on police bail in June.

Magistrate Norasidah allowed Goh bail at RM10,000 with one surety, alongside an order requiring him to report to a police station once a month.

The court fixed Nov 20 for case mention and the submission of documents.
