KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today took a veiled jibe at Pakatan Harapan’s past election manifesto to slash petrol prices within 24 hours if the coalition won the general election.

Speaking at the 2026 Umno General Assembly today, Ahmad Zahid said Umno is a far-sighted party with a long-term vision for Malaysia rather than one that merely hopes to survive one election after another.

“We are starting again after a fall,” he said, referring to Umno’s disastrous outing in GE14, held in 2018.

“From once ruling the country and being a dominant force, we have experienced being the opposition and then sharing power.

“Now, we are ready to create another victory,” he added.

Stressing that Umno would not make unrealistic promises, Zahid said: “We are also not a party that says, menang hari ini (win today)…” as the crowd responded, “minyak turun (fuel prices down)”.

Similarly, he also took a swipe at the PH-led unity government’s flip-flopping approach in withdrawing and later reinstating the subsidised fuel quota to 300 litres under the Budi95 programme.

“First, they reduce the quota, then they reinstate it. Next, I think they will pull it back and restore it nearer to the next general election.

“Who is doing this? Guru,” he said, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.

Zahid did not elaborate on whom he meant by “guru”, though the remark was widely seen as a veiled reference to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“God willing, we will be able to perform better than Guru has done,” he added.
