KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — Puteri Umno chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi today said that challenging or dismissing the royal power to grant pardons directly undermined the Federal Constitution.

During her keynote address at the Puteri Umno General Assembly, held in conjunction with the 2026 Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, Amal described the royal institution as a key pillar of national sovereignty.

“Article 42 of the Federal Constitution grants the power of pardon to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, State Rulers, and Governors — challenging or dismissing this power directly undermines the Constitution itself.

“Respecting the Royal Institution and upholding the Constitution transcends partisan politics.

“Governments and political tides change, but the authority of the Monarchy and the Constitution must remain protected,” Amal said.

She added that political differences or interests were not a licence to erode the authority of the royal institution.

Also present were Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, information chief Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

The assembly was also attended by delegates from Singapore, Japan and the United Kingdom, as well as representatives of Ameerah Malaysia, PAS’ young women’s wing.

Puteri Umno is also marking its 25th anniversary at this year’s assembly.
