Johor ready for cloud seeding as El Nino looms from October

JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 8 — Johor is prepared to conduct cloud seeding exercises if any of the state’s 17 dams experience low water levels in preparation for the El Nino phenomenon by next month, said Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.

He said the current situation is under control as the state government monitors the water levels in dams on a daily basis.

“We are just preparing to face the super El Nino phenomenon which is expected from October to December. 

“As a precautionary measure, we have also reached out to the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) for cloud seeding preparations.

“Johor may request formcloud seeding exercises done earlier before the drought period. At present, cloud seeding has been carried out in several states but not in Johor yet,” he told reporters after attending a taxi driver’s programme in conjunction with the Visit Johor Year 2026 at the Johor Tourism Information Centre (Jotic) here today.

Mohamad Fazli said Johor’s water levels in all dams are still at a stable level and some are also at a cautionary level.

“There are dam capacities that can last for up to six more months and only the dam in Gunung Pulai is in alert stage at the moment,” he said, adding that there is a possibility that the dam in Macap will also be affected.

However, Mohamad Fazli said the state government has not finalised the dams to focus on for cloud seeding.

He said that apart from cloud seeding, several other initiatives will be carried out such as pumping water from one water source to another on a smaller scale.
