DUNGUN,  Sept 7 — A four-month-old baby girl died after being found unconscious at a childcare centre in Bandar Al Muktafi Billah Shah (AMBS) near here today.

Dungun police chief Supt Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat said police received a report on the incident at 3.41 pm.

He said preliminary investigations found that the baby had been dropped off at the centre by her mother at about 8 am in good health.

“At about 10 am, staff at the centre found the victim unconscious after she had slept and been fed milk.

“She was taken to Durian Mas Health Clinic before being referred to Dungun Hospital,” he said in a statement today.

Nik Ab Halim said medical personnel at the hospital conducted examinations and resuscitation efforts, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but the baby was pronounced dead at about 12.45 pm.

He said no visible physical injuries were found during an initial examination of the body.

“However, the exact cause of death has yet to be determined, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted,” he said.

He added that police had identified the two caregivers on duty at the time and would record their statements, along with those of the victim’s parents and other relevant witnesses.

Police will also obtain medical reports and professional opinions as part of the investigation.

The police have opened an investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 to determine whether there were elements of negligence or abandonment while the victim was under the care of the childcare centre. — Bernama
