KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — The Election Commission (EC), which marks its 69th anniversary today, has reaffirmed its commitment to managing the country’s electoral process fairly, transparently, efficiently and with integrity.

In a Facebook post today, the EC said that over its 69-year history, it had continued to evolve with the times in strengthening the country’s democratic system through elections.

The EC has also continued to improve its service delivery to the public, with greater efficiency and transparency.

“May the EC continue to move forward with integrity and remain a trusted democratic institution in safeguarding and strengthening the country’s democratic process.

“The EC, efficient and transparent,” according to the post.

The EC was established on Sept 4, 1957, in accordance with Article 114 of the Federal Constitution, with its membership initially comprising a chairman and two members.

Datuk Dr Mustafa Albakri Hassan served as the commission’s first chairman, with Lee Ewe Boon and Ditt Singh as its two members.

Following the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the commission’s membership was increased to three, with the additional member appointed from either Sabah or Sarawak on a rotating basis.

The EC was expanded to seven members in 2002, comprising a chairman, deputy chairman and five members, including one representative each from Sabah and Sarawak. — Bernama
