JASIN, Sept 2 — An ambulance driver pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate’s Court here today to a charge of reckless driving that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old motorcyclist last week.
Mohd Noorikhmal Baharuddin, 41, was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act with driving a Toyota Hiace ambulance recklessly at the Kampung Ayer Merbau T-junction traffic light at about 9.15 am on Aug 26, causing the death of Muhammad Amirul Asyraaf Md Azizan.
The offence carries a jail term of five to 10 years, a fine of RM20,000 to RM50,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for up to five years.
The prosecution, conducted by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Hafiz Othman, proposed RM8,000 bail with one surety and a temporary suspension of the accused’s driving licence. Defence counsel Datin Kharen Jit Kaur sought lower bail, citing his cooperation with the investigation.
Magistrate Mazana Sinin set bail at RM3,000 and allowed the additional condition on his driving licence. She also set Sept 17 for mention for the submission of relevant documents. — Bernama
